Fishful thinking

76 dozen
In case you ever wondered what 76 dozen flies looked like

It's been damn near a month since I've had contact with a cyprinid. Tough going. Rivers are still blown, though they are slightly receding now. The major drainages will likely remain in flood stage through the beginning of June. That's a long time to wait for a river to settle down.

In the meantime, all my local spots with decent angler access have been closed to protect spawning walleyes. Effectively, I've been shut down from fishing, even literally right in my backyard. I could charge east for 45 miles and hit up some bluewater for german trout; cold water and cool temps have inhibited any significant hatches at this point. This river can be a bitch to nymph during early season, and I just don't feel like swinging big meaty streamers just yet. Too early.

On the plus side, the local reaches will open back up this weekend, due to the fishing "opener". I hate to break it to people, but I've been fishing for roughfish all year long: there is no closed season. Yes, I'll now be fighting spots with other game fish anglers, but at least I'll have access again.

On a final note, at least the high turbid water has had some benefit. While it makes for tough fishing on a fly, it makes for even tougher bowfishing conditions when the fish are scattered and hard to locate. Hopefully those clowns have saved a few behemoths for me.

  1. I want to see what the mound of debris looks like under that desk - and whether you're still on speaking terms with the spouse and child.

...and how many hooks were imbedded in them sock-feet in the wee hours of the evening.
