If these walls could talk... At the turn of the 20th Century this facility located on the Eastern shore of Upper Red Lake was the primary producer of walleyes that were stocked across the state of Minnesota, and the source for many of the walleyes stocked across parts of the U.S. The number of eggs entering and leaving this facility in steel milk jugs were unfathomable. #waskish #upperredlake #fisheriesmanagement #minnesota #walleyefactory

So this happened last week. Went scouting for gar and left my gar flies and net in the truck. Rookie mistake. Spotted some gar and all I had was a bonefish shrimp pattern. I hooked a couple of gar but couldn't land them. When I tried to hoist them on the bank the hook fell out of their bony jaw. Some folks were busy chasing carp competitively today, I chose a more worthwhile pursuit, hunting for bigmouth buffalo. This warrior has been ravaged from the toils of the spawn. It's amazing how beat up these fish get each Spring from spawning. #tbt to that time I almost died carp fishing. This mirror carp was hard earned. I fished a string of hot days on the South Platte when I was in Denver for the #iftd show back in September of 2010. Low flows forced us to seek out sources of fresh water entering the system, resulting in us fishing downstream of a water treatment plant. After landing this fish we had sucked in enough ammonia to make our lungs start burning. Sometimes you gotta pay to play. #dsp #flyfishing #carponthefly #carppro #mirrorcarp

Not a symbiotic relationship. Zebra mussels showed up in the Otter Tail River drainage a few years ago and it was only a matter of time before they became well established further downstream. Here, several zebra mussels have attached to a native Unionid mussel. It is only a matter of time before they suffocate the mussel, usurping all of its food before it has a chance to enter its siphon. #AIS #stopANS #zebramussels #protectourstreams

One of my most interesting catches to date, a native chestnut lamprey. Look at those teeth! All business. My guess is that I lined the host fish while fishing a current seam and the fly must have slid down and hooked the lamprey in the mouth. Here's a throwback to one of my original patterns from way back, the Dragon Slayer. This version is tied a bit more diminutively than the original with smaller bead chain eyes. Featuring ruffed grouse soft hackle and marabou. Tie it with olive dubbing and you have yourself a Damsel Slayer.
