It's dawned on me that I haven't published a recipe for my infamous
Carp Crack pattern. I realize that I could pull a dick move and not disclose the
simplicity secret behind this lethal pattern. I could direct you to my
online store for some or tell you to go find a fly shop that carries my flies. I'm not gonna be that guy, at least for today. Many of you have asked for it, so here it is.
Carp Crack
Hook: Mustad 34007/S71SZ, Size 6
Thread: UNI-thread 6/0, Red
Antennae: Medium Centipede Legs, Hot Orange
Body: Roughfisher's Seal Sub Dub, Burnt Orange
Front Hackle: Ruffed Grouse or Hungarian Partridge, Dark/Brown
Thorax: Roughfisher's Seal Sub Dub, Burnt Orange
Eyes: #8 Bead chain, orange
Don't say I've never gave you anything...
I don't have your proprietary dubbing but I have acceptable substitutes, and I've figured much of it out. But those eyes, you helped me out with those, too kind. Thanks!

Hey Gregg, here's where I get the ball chain: http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/ball-chains-543629/
ReplyDeleteWonderful! Thanks much. The fly is immortal.

Yo, used a variation on this (recalled *poorly* from memory) to catch my first carp on fly ever. I'd reckon second or third cast, strip sloooooow, fish on! 'Bout the only difference was some black marabou for a tail between the splayed legs and the palmered collar went 360 degrees. Hooked 3 on that fly before one rubbed me of on some stick or something. Bloody 3x tippet.
ReplyDeleteSo anyways, thanks for that.
